Papayas, Bananas, and Pineapple

Papayas are orange or red inside and very sweet- a delicious treat after working in the garden in the heat all afternoon.
There are many, many different kinds of bananas in PNG. Some are sweet, like the type we are used to eating in the U.S, but some are called "cooking bananas". They are a smaller banana that you just place in the fire and let it cook, then eat it plain, or you can peel it first, and cook in a pot with greens, coconut milk, and kau kau. (a very typical meal in PNG).
Did you know pineapples grow on the ground? This was something I was surprised to learn. There is only one pineapple per plant also. Never throw away the top green part; you replant it in the ground to grow another one. The pineapple shown here is not quite ripe yet, since it has that reddish tinge to it.
